One day I was walking my son Liam through his pre-school to the playground area for morning dropoff. As we were turning the corner I heard one of his classmates say to a teacher, “I am going to Liam’s to build a treehouse”. Apparently a few of the kids in Liam’s class, and of course Liam, decide that they were going to build a treehouse in our backyard. I’m not sure how this got started but for months every time I picked up Liam a few kids would come up to me and ask when we were going to build a treehouse. I couldn’t help but laugh and smile at the cuteness.
Of course I got to work and set up a playdate. But how do we build a treehouse without a tree and without nails and big pieces of wood? Well, leave it up to my husband (who thinks he is MacGyver) to come up with the perfect solution…..duck tape, moving boxes and a few fake tools (and a Leatherman for dad – wouldn’t be MacGyver without it).
My husband led the team in building their dream treehouse. I think it eventually turned into a castle but either way everyone had a good time. My husband put his MacGyver skills to work and the kids loved helping him make it. I think we spent more time making it than we did playing in it.

First, the imagination….what will we create with all these boxes????

Then, the craftmanship….placing ducktape and random pieces of colored paper and stickers

Eventually, the propping up….. making it stand up

Finally….the playing
Forget the fancy toys. Moving boxes are all the rage these days
Use these pictures for inspiration and ideas on how to build your own. Don’t forget to keep one box intact to use as a tunnel entrance to the castle treehouse.
Dream big, build high and use lots of duck tape!
