Sometimes you get stuck. Your legs feel like led and your mind like mush. Oh, I know that feeling too well. When that happens to me I try to CREATE something different. Change my thinking patterns, shake up the noggin and distract myself for a few minutes before getting back to life.
The other day, in a desperate attempt to get out of my office, I went to a restaurant to read over lunch. I felt like I was reading the same line on the same page of my book over and over again. My brain was total mush. I turned to my journal, flipped to a blank page and began to draw. The restaurant had music playing in the background so I decided to draw what I heard. The two pictures are my fabulous renditions of song 1 and song 2. If you look at the two pictures there is a big difference between how I interpreted the two songs. The first one seems smoother and more free-flowing while the second song seems sharper and precise. Drawing it helped me describe how I took in the music. Soon after I started I could feel the brainwaves dancing around. It’s amazing how a 5-minute activity can set the tone (no pun intended) for the rest of the day. After that, creativity was flowing.
It’s said that DaVinci used this technique as well to unleash creativity. I try to draw what I hear at least once a week now.
The next time you are stuck in traffic, at your desk, in the kitchen or wherever you have music pull out a blank piece of paper and some pens. You don’t need to wait until you’re stuck to draw. I suggest doing it often. It’s fun, creative and like I said, sets the tone…..
If you have kids, they are naturals at this one and often use color to represent what they hear as well. Grab a set of colored pencils and draw until the song ends.
