“If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. “
- Abraham Maslow
Materials:
At least 50 blank index cards
A range of images cut out or printed
Pen
Objective of game:
Come up with new ideas
Solve a challenge
On the first index card write down the type of new idea you are trying to come up with or the challenge you are trying to solve. If it’s a challenge the card might say, “How do I…….?”
If it’s a new idea it might say, “New product ideas around…?”
On the remaining 49 cards put one image or word that represents an aspect of what’s on your first index card. For example, if you are trying to figure out what to do with your life, you may have everything from the word dad to a picture of cooking or painting or whatever else makes up who you are. If your focus is a new idea, make sure your note cards cover features, needs, competitors, experiences, etc.
It’s important that you don’t hold back. Get it all on the cards.
Then, randomly pick up two cards at time and ask yourself…
What do these two things have in common?
Where do these two things intersect?
What can these two things learn from each other?
Don’t stop until you’ve exhausted every combination.
Write down all your answers on a piece of paper as you go through the exercise.
Now that you have a plethora of possibilities in front of you it’s time to focus.
With a red pen, circle all the ideas or solutions that stand out on the page. Don’t worry about quantity yet, just circle what feels right.
Next, put those ideas through your personal filter. Ask yourself…
Being resourceful and creative, can I get this done?
Do I have passion for this?
Will I feel happy doing this?
Will this move me closer to goals?
With a blue pen go back and circle all the ideas that make it through the above filter.
Congrats! You now have a list of actionable ideas and solutions full of inspiration and passion.
